I come from a design background. When AI-generated images first became popular, the design community was almost divided into two camps: one panicked, saying "we're going to lose our jobs," and the other was stubborn, saying "those images lack soul." Honestly, I think both views miss the point. After using AI for a while, I want to share some realistic thoughts.
First, let's acknowledge: it can generate images, and it's fast
Let's not rush to defend "design is not just about drawing." The fact is, AI can now generate a usable image at an alarming speed.
I used to take on projects like "create twenty social media post background images," which would either involve searching through stock photo libraries until my eyes blurred or creating each one from scratch until I questioned my life choices. Now? I use Ideogram (because it can even handle Chinese characters on the images), or Recraft to create consistent vector styles, and I can finish a batch in ten minutes. For tasks that require a large quantity, low complexity, and high repetition, AI can do them quickly and efficiently without complaining. I won't pretend this isn't happening.
But what it can't do is the key point
However, when you actually work on a project, you realize that clients never just want "an image."
Clients will say, "I want something that's... high-end but not too cold, young but not childish, with a sense of quality but within this budget." This kind of vague, contradictory, and emotionally charged demand requires you to "translate" it into a concrete visual and then communicate back and forth until they're satisfied. AI can give you a hundred images, but it doesn't know which one to choose, why to choose it, or how to explain it to the client. This "judgment" and "communication" part is what designers are really selling.
My current job, in essence, has shifted from "drawing with my hands" to "using my brain to select and explain." AI helps me with the drawing part, but I still need to decide what to draw, why, and how to convince the client.
The ones truly impacted are actually this group of people
Let's be honest. I think the people most impacted by AI-generated images are not designers with ideas, but rather those "executors" without a viewpoint.
In the past, there was a type of job that involved receiving clear instructions and creating images without needing to think too much. This kind of "pure execution" work is exactly what AI is best at. If your value lies only in "being able to use software to create images," then yes, you're in danger. But if you can understand business goals, communicate with people, and explain why a design is the way it is, AI actually makes you more valuable — because you can use it to produce ten times the quantity.
My advice to design students
I often get asked by students, "Is it still worth learning design?" My answer is: yes, but don't just learn software operations.
Software can be replaced by AI, but "aesthetics," "understanding of business," and "communication skills" cannot. Treat AI as a super-fast hand, and you be the brain with taste and understanding of the client. No matter how tools change, people who can judge "what is good and why" will always have a job.
So, will we lose our jobs?
Yes and no.
If you think design is just about "using software to generate images," then AI is indeed taking over that part. But if you understand design as "using visuals to solve business problems and collaborate with people," then AI is just a faster pen in your hand.
I haven't lost my job; in fact, I've gotten more projects — because I can use AI to increase my productivity and spend the saved time on tasks that truly require brainpower. Tools are never the enemy; it's the outdated mindset that refuses to adapt. Frequently Asked Questions
